About Kendama Kendama is a traditional Japanese game of skill, derived from the old European 'Cup and Ball' game. The ball is attached to the Kendama by a cord. The object of the game is to catch the ball in one of the 3 different sized cups, or on the spike. The game gets more difficult as you progress to more challenging tricks, like catching the spike ON the ball! There are loads of tricks to learn, and film of Kendama players is increasingly available on YouTube and similar sites.
Be warned that this is a surprisingly addictive game, and definitely has that 'just one more go' appeal for players of all ages. It is quite a buzz when you nail a new trick!
Note that the Japanese wooden Kendama are imported from Japan and all packaging and instructions are in Japanese. The Yomega Star Catch and the Tom Kuhn Kendama have instructions in English.
JKA Approved Kendama The Japanese Kendama Association (JKA) approves some wooden kendama for competition. The JKA approved competition kendama have a JKA sticker on the stem as can be seen in the photograph. Presently the TK16 Master, Sakura and Oozora are JKA approved and bear the JKA seal.

Genuine Japanese Kendama strings. These are Oozora (ozora) kendama strings. Will fit any kendama model. The ends of the strings are hardened to allow for easier restringing.
Pack of 3 strings and 3 blue beads.
The strings are white, and each is approximately 50cm long. Each string is supplied with a small blue bead. The string should be knotted at one end and the bead threaded onto it. The end of the string with the bead on it goes in the wooden Kendama ball. The knot and bead stop the string from coming out of the Kendama ball. The other end is tied to the kendama.
Tip: before replacing a string, have a look at how the existing string is fitted!

The Oozora (aka Ozora or "Big Sky") Kendama is approved by the Japanese Kendama Association (JKA) for competition use. JKA approved kendama carry the JKA endorsement sticker on the handle of the kendama. These are nicely balanced Kendama, better suited to more experienced players since the paint does chip and mark quite easily. Some players feel the superior weight distribution helps you to perform more complex tricks. For this reason the Oozora kendama is preferred by many more experienced players.
